What is dental implantology?

Dental implants are medical devices surgically implanted into the jaw to restore a person's ability to chew or their appearance. They provide support for artificial teeth, such as crowns, bridges or dentures.

When a tooth is lost due to injury or disease, a person may experience complications such as rapid bone loss, speech disorders, or changes in chewing patterns that cause discomfort. Replacing a lost tooth with a dental implant can significantly improve a patient's quality of life and health.

Dental implant systems consist of a dental implant body and a dental implant abutment and may also include an abutment fixation screw. The body of the dental implant is surgically inserted into the jaw bone in place of the tooth root. The dental implant abutment is usually attached to the implant body via the abutment fixation screw and extends through the gums into the mouth to support the attached artificial teeth.

Are Dental Implants Safe?

Dental implants have been used and proven to be a safe and effective method of replacing teeth for over 50 years.

Dental implant systems are generally made of materials that follow the international consensus standards of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or ASTM International. These standards contain details about what makes a material safe. Most implant systems are made of titanium or zirconium oxide. Sometimes other materials are used such as gold alloys, cobalt-based alloys, titanium alloys or ceramic materials. The safety profiles of these materials are well known.

TYPES OF IMPLANTS

Implantology traditional

Dental implantology is the set of surgical techniques that have the aim of rehabilitating a patient's masticatory function, using dental implants, i.e. artificial pillars which, once integrated into the bone, can support one or more artificial teeth.

The dental implant replaces and totally replaces both the aesthetic and functional point of view of the lost tooth. The total time, in traditional implantology, for implant-prosthetic rehabilitation ranges from 3 months to 6 months, depending on the clinical case.

Technique
All-on-4

An effective treatment option, particularly indicated in patients with bone atrophy, maxillary atrophy and mandibular atrophy. It replaces missing teeth with a complete restoration that is fixed with just four dental implants, of which two central ones are straight and parallel and two outer ones are inclined. This solution makes treatment simpler and reduces the need to resort to more invasive interventions, such as those to increase bone volume.

Advantages:

Obtaining the fixed full-arch prosthesis on the day of surgery quickly leads to improved patient satisfaction in terms of functionality, aesthetics, perception, phonation and self-esteem.

  • Shorter treatment times

Tilting the posterior implants avoids the need for lengthy bone grafting procedures, while immediate loading shortens treatment times.

  • Lower costs

The concept is less expensive than conventional methods of implant treatment of edentulous and near-dentulous jaws.

Technique
All-on-6

Developed mainly for the upper arch, the All-On-Six technique consists of the insertion of six implants, two of which are inclined (external) to avoid invasion of the maxillary sinuses. This allows the implants to be immediately loaded with a fixed temporary resin arch of twelve elements (immediate loading).

This procedure can also be programmed on a computer and performed with guided surgery when the conditions exist (computer guided implantology).
